At some point during lockdown, I reconnected with my old classical guitar that had been collecting dust in a closet for close to ten years. I actually wrote a lot of songs for the new album on that guitar, including this song. Somehow that mellow, meditative song turned into a loud, grungy guitar song in the studio. I still love it on just a classical guitar, but I think the loose, crunchy Neil Young-esque guitars on this album version help communicate the raw emotion of the song.
lyrics
When the last leaf has fallen without a sound
I see your breath every time you speak out
The sky opens up, a twinkling of night
As we hang in the balance of the dark and the light
Can you give me a reason to believe
My heart’s on the wire skipping beats
I’m not the same person you touched yesterday
We’re ushering in a season of change
Crossing the threshold, raise your head high
Be not afraid of the darkness, or the light
Can you give me a reason to believe
My heart’s on the wire skipping beats
When last leaf has fallen without a sound
I let you in every time I breathe out

This ain't Texas. This ain't Nashville. This is country that straddles the US and Canadian border. Its wide open, strong, and a little vulnerable, and in a lot of cases having a good ol' time. I love her feel. veenstar

A very clever songwriter and an album that bears many, many repeat listens. Worth the price for the Little Feat reference (in Tehachapi) alone, but it's her way with an image that sticks longest. "You left the building in a flurry / Had your boots on in the house." Caoimhín

i love eilen jewell. just listened to the entire album, get behind the wheel, now going back and listening to and savoring individual tracks. her music has an indescribable beauty. it's real, honest, sweet, powerful, touching, universal. it's a special artist that can do all that and leave you coming back for more. tikibarjim
